Pregnancy is a Stretch

One of the first places you’ll notice your body changing is your bustline. For women who have always had slender bustlines, becoming more buxom is kind of fun. But your go-to bras are going to become uncomfortable pretty fast.

During your pregnancy, you’ll want to invest in a couple of good nursing bras that are designed to stretch to fit you as you grow.

Many women find nursing to be one of the most special experiences of their lives, as they bond with their baby like nobody else can. But it is a 24/7 job. Absolutely you need bras that open with one hand while you hold your baby in the other hand.

Playtex Nursing bras offer:

  • Simple S-3XL sizing and stretchy fabric that grows with you during pregnancy
  • Four Way support from famous Playtex TruSUPPORT design
  • Quickstrap® clips that detach quickly for easy nursing

Leading Lady Nursing bras offer:

  • Traditional cup and band sizing from 32B-56G or S-5X sizing
  • Clasps that open easily using just one hand (or pull-aside design)

Sports Bras for Nursing

Take Care of Yourself

Now, more than ever, you need to take care of yourself. That’s the very best way to take care of your baby.

If you feel exhausted (one of the most common complaints during pregnancy), you may think the last thing you need to do is work out, but you do. When you make time for yourself to take a pre-natal yoga class, or go for a walk, you’ll feel better and more energetic the rest of the day. You may want to exercise early in the day if your legs swell as the day goes on.

You’ll be more comfortable while you exercise (and more inspired to exercise) if you have maternity sports bras.

Comfort/Sleep Nursing Bras

Get Plenty of Sleep & Pamper Yourself

Another way to take good care of yourself is to get enough sleep. Sleeping may not be comfortable as you adjust to your new body. You may find that cat naps during the day are good for you during pregnancy, even if you aren’t usually a napper.

During pregnancy, make yourself relax. Sometimes you can feel your body say it’s had enough and sometimes it feels as if all your energy is going to baby instead of to you. Sit down, put your feet up, read a book or watch a fun movie. Pamper yourself: you and your baby deserve it.

For maximum comfort while relaxing at home, or if you find it more comfortable to wear a bra to sleep, choose a comfort/sleeping bra. Sleeping in a nursing sleep bra will provide quicker access for baby during the night rather than fumbling with a nightgown or pajama top.

Basics for Your Maternity Wardrobe

Once you’ve picked out nursing bras, choose some other basic pieces to wear during pregnancy. You can go a long way with a small number of pieces that mix and match. You may be shocked at your growing size every time you look in a mirror, but don’t skimp on meals. You need those calories – and so does baby. If you buy clothes, like our panties, camis, jegging & legging, that grow with you, there’s no reason to stress over your expanding waistline.

Nursing camis or tops can be first layers or sleep tops. A nursing cami layered under a jacket or a pretty shawl will allow you to nurse discreetly in more public settings. If you are nursing when you return to work, you will probably need to use a breast pump. Layering a nursing top under a sweater or jacket may prevent you from having to undress to get the job done.

First, you’ll want maternity panties to feel comfortable fairly early on in your pregnancy. Playtex nursing offers two maternity panties. Both are tag free, offer full back coverage and are sold in three packs. They are designed to stretch to fit as you grow.

Playtex Maternity V-Front Hipster

  • Ultra soft fabric stretches to fit
  • V-front design for under-the-belly comfort

Playtex Maternity Fold Down Modern Brief

  • Wear waistband up for more baby bump coverage or fold it down to fi under your baby bump.
  • Ultra soft fabric stretches to fit.

Leggings and/or jeggings can go almost anywhere under a tunic and will be comfy even if you are experiencing leg swelling. A legging may be just the sleep bottom you need to feel comfortable (and support your baby bump) while you sleep.

Leading Lady Maternity Jeggings

  • Expandable belly band supports from baby bump to back
  • Soft, stretchy breathable fabric smooths and supports
  • Ultra-soft cotton blend denim-finish fabric

Leading Lady Maternity Support Leggings

  • Expandable belly zone grows with baby and gives underbelly support for gentle lift
  • Built-in maternity support band provides soothing back support and helps your posture
  • Seamless flexible support zones shape sides and back
  • Cotton-blend stretch opaque fabric contours to your body

Other wardrobe tips…

Choose cute maternity tops that make you feel pretty. To save money, look for long tunics that you can wear during pregnancy and after your maternity leave. (You probably won't return to your pre-maternity size immediately.)

Wear very comfortable shoes with support. Yes, your feet "grow" too, so you'll probably need larger size shoes with plenty of support to hold up your baby bump. This is not the time for stilettos.

Smart strategies for naming your baby...

Consider naming baby after a famous person – with a twist. Often a last name can be used as a first name, such as naming a son James after that basketball player better known by his first name. Most US Presidents, for instance, have last names that can be used as first names.

Consider naming baby after a character in your favorite movie or novel. Love Jane Austin? Darcy, Austin, Emma & Jane are all terrific choices (if there’s a Jane somewhere in the family tree, you’ll score extra points, and nobody needs to know you were really paying homage to Jane Austin.) You may not want to name baby for the main character in the hottest movie the year he was born. Will your child want to be one of 5 Hans in his kindergarten class?

Take a minute to consider acronyms and monograms. Darius Oliver Gaines is a beautiful name, but do you want your child to be called DOG? Especially for a girl, consider monograms, in which the last name is in the middle. Charlotte Tamara Allen creates a monogram of CAT – perhaps not what she wants on her towels.

Middle names are a great opportunity to honor a grandparent or a great aunt with a family name without saddling your child with a first name you really aren’t in love with.

Be sure to think through all the ways the name will be shortened or lengthened by friends, teachers, coaches or your child himself. If you love Daniel but hate Danny and Dan or you love Abigail but hate Abby and Gail, you may want to pick another name entirely.

Consider the aura around certain names. If both you and your spouse are klutzy, naming your baby Grace may be wishful thinking. A name like Aristotle or Einstein may be an academic burden your child would rather not try to live up to.

Be sure you say the entire name – first, middle, last – out loud several times. A couple chose Snow as a middle name for their baby girl because they hadn’t picked out a middle name and she was born after a long labor during a snowstorm. The birth certificate was signed before it occurred to the sleep-deprived parents that their last name was White – they’d accidentally named their baby Snow White.
